My Sweetsland is the journey of two “displaced” black men: It is clear that they are not from the country they are in right now. They are outsiders who have dared to seek freedom and dream of being artists and further their professional training. They are tantalizingly close to realizing their dreams and must perform Antigone for their combined Master Project and in order to receive funding for further shows in Switzerland. In rehearsing for the piece they are forced to ask themselves questions that cause conflict within themselves and with each other on what theatre really is. They have to find a European way of doing theatre in order to get the funding and contacts they need. And they have to do it European way, European narrative for the European money and the European audience – Or do they really?
The repressive cultural institutions somehow lead them to fight against each other, instead of uniting and confronting the real “enemy” together. Their disagreements touch on various topics from cultural hegemony and cultural imperialism to visas, freedoms, privileges and gender. Highlighting the complexity of black political, geographical, religious, economic and cultural diversity that has often been oversimplified.
The performance can be combined with the performance Knight-Night by Bryana Fritz and Thibault Lac.
