"On one side or the other of the ocean, or in the middle of the seas, people have known how to maintain communication and contact through waves, spores, winds, telepathies... in order to survive. People don't necessarily have to come together in the same place at the same time to become a significant force..."
When we were writing the text for the program in January 2020, how could we have known that the world would take our musings so literally? At that time, we were thinking about how we could support each other at a distance and then the pandemic came with its massive impact, with the increase in violence, with aggressive borders, with the growing number of deaths. The pandemic redefined our perception. Suddenly, working with distance and the absence of others is no longer just a hunch or a concept, it is the "new normality".
Some of the invited artists did not come to Europe because Europe made it impossible. Others insisted on coming anyway. Some were in Europe and still decided not to approach. And some did not come because they simply did not want to. We had to find new ways to share and experience artistic works across distances, whether it was two meters or thousands of kilometers away. We refined our hearing to perceive the different absences. Papudo, Paris, Lisboa, Melcocho, Medellín, Berlin, Cros Bas, Cali, Užice, Zurich... became the places where artists found a time to advance a question, an idea, to nudge a work towards a certain direction.
El Caldo is the place where we can hear with our own ears and experience in our own bodies what has been created in this way. None of the ingredients of the broth (Caldo) will be served separately, all the works (audio, video and text) will be shared over three days, so that we can perceive the vibrations that arise between them and taste the juices that merge in the common brew. The broth will be served at a distance, through radio waves, postal packages and stream of data.
El Caldo takes place in three spheres: on the radio, online and by mail. You are cordially invited to attend according to your needs and possibilities. A Festival Pass gives you access to the three spheres: in addition to the radio shows, you will have access to the online works Transit in the House of Cancer and Todas las aguas; and you will also receive a package sent to your postal address with Siren Talks and additional works by the artists. The packages will be sent by post on 9.2. Later, a digital version will be sent by email.
El Caldo invites you to support the fundraising organized by Doña Ola as part of their entanglement with the Melcocho river and it’s need for protection against extractive mining. To know more about the Melcocho you can listen to Todas las aguas, to donate you can click here.
